The Galt Minor Hockey School has 5 divisions with children in ages from 4 - 7 years old. Starting in our Learn to Skate divisions (4-5) where classes are strictly for skating only, Hockey is a skating game and our aim is to develop good strong skaters. Moving to our Hockey Basics 1 level program (5-6)) where skating and learning how to use the stick is taught along with the hockey fundamentals. Hockey Basics 2 is our next step. Again the accent is on skating at a more progressive level as is Hockey Basics 3.
By having these 3 different levels in Hockey Basics, we can open up the ice and in turn get more 1 on 1 instruction. At any level children can advance throughout the year to the higher levels as they learn and need to be challenged at a higher skill level. Our Tyke division (6-7) where much of the time is spent on more power skating and the introduction of hockey games. These children receive 2 hours of ice time per week which over the seasons 22 practices sessions on ice, a video or lessons on our plastic floor in our classroom each Saturday before their ice time.
With 20 games and instructors on the ic of part of the season correcting mistakes as they occur. We hope at this are group these young players learn the basic skills and to have fun. If they don't enjoy both the practices and games, then they may give up playing minor hockey and miss out on a opportunity for personal and team achievement.
